WWF Royal Rumble 1998 - January 1998

WWF Royal Rumble 1998 - January 18th 1998 - San Jose, California

Matches
Vader defeated The Artist formerly known as Goldust (6/10)
Max Mini, Mosaic and Nova defeated Battalion, El Torito and Tarantula (2/10)
The Rock defeated Ken Shamrock {WWF Intercontinental Title} (7/10)
Legion of Doom defeated New Age Outlaws via DQ {WWF Tag Team Titles} (7/10)
Steve Austin won the Royal Rumble (9/10)
Shawn Michaels defeated The Undertaker {WWF World Heavyweight Title Casket Match} (9/10)

Moments - Positives
The main event was an absolute classic. This was HBK and HHH at their DX best and it was also the true boiling point of the Kane/Undertaker feud. The burning of the casket at the end of the show added to the main events bizzare ending and it was truly one of the classic moments of WWF history. Austin winning the Royal Rumble was also brilliant especially as the Rumble was one of the better ones in history (Mick Foley entering as three characters was sheer genius!). The IC title match was also good and thoroughly enjoyable!

Moments - Negatives
The more midget wrestling WWF includes the lower my review of their PPVs. To think they were competing against nWo and a great Curiserweight division in wCw by having a 6 man tag team midget wrestling match. This was truly Vince McMahon/Vince Russo at their worst. The rest of the card was actually good compared to this.

Overall
A very good Royal Rumble and particularly a very good PPV main event in the World Title casket match. Austin was truly beginning to shine through in WWF and this highlighted by his win of the Rumble. It was also great seeing Tyson in attendance. HBK had a back injury by this PPV match and yet the main event is a true classic and one of the best HBK matches of all time! What a legend.

SCORE = 8.5
